Abstract:
This dataset is an adaptation of the Washington State ShoreZone Inventory linear shoreline data. It introduces new attributes describing the original deth_class field, a numeric code based on the 1990 Dethier habitat classification system. All of the 60 Dethier classes occurring in Washington State have updated and enhanced descriptions, physical characteristics, frequency of occurrence, example locations, and related species.This 2014 update was conducted by Megan Dethier, author of the original 1990 WA DNR publication "A marine and estuarine habitat classification system for Washington State" created for the Washington Natural Heritage Program. The 2014 fish species analysis was conducted by Charles ‘Si’ Simenstad. The project was commissioned in 2013 by the UW Puget Sound Institute.The ShoreZone classification system is somewhat different than the system in Dethier (1990), e.g. it differentiates substrates across different zones of the shoreline, has somewhat different definitions of wave exposure and the marine/estuarine boundary, etc. The mapped units here (“Dethier Class”) are a hybrid of these two systems, and as such they match neither classification system perfectly. The purpose of this data is provide updated shore type descriptions, physical attributes, and related species lists that align spatially with the numbered deth_class values in the Washington State ShoreZone Inventory linear data. This information can be used for research, resource management, or emergency response.
